Countering diversion of small arms and light weapons in the Commonwealth
The effective control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and their ammunition is a goal that unites countries across the Commonwealth, due to the severity of the potential consequences of their misuse. The Commonwealth Heads of Government, at their meeting in April 2018, acknowledged the devastating consequences of the illicit trade in SALW and agreed to strengthen cooperation and exchange of information to counter this threat. The Conventional Arms Control in the Commonwealth Initiative was set up to support member countries and strengthen cooperation. Representatives of Commonwealth member came together to discuss the issue of diversion in February 2018 and exchange good practice.
In this context, researchers and representatives of Commonwealth countries will discuss good practice and effective models. The event will also be an opportunity to present the Conventional Arms Control in the Commonwealth Initiative web platform, which will act as an important new information sharing tool for Commonwealth countries.
